As of October 27, 61 claims have been approved by the General Motors Victim Compensation Fund in order to settle accident claims stemming from a faulty ignition switch, according to Reuters.

Thirty claims of incidents resulting in death and 31 incidents of serious injury have been acknowledged and approved by GM since the submission period first opened in August. Millions of GM vehicles, spanning several makes and models, were equipped with ignition switches that may slip out of position, stalling the vehicle and disabling the airbags, power steering, and brakes. GM allegedly knew about the malfunction for 11 years before they finally issued a recall. No cap has been set regarding the settlement, but GM has reportedly set aside $400 million. The first check is expected to be dispersed soon, with $1.3 million likely to be paid to each eligible wrongful death claimant.

Claims of injury or death from accidents caused by a faulty ignition switch in GM’s Chevrolet Colbalt or the Saturn Ion can be submitted until December 31 of this year.
