Brian and Megan Fox, who are residents of Nashville, Tennessee, filed a lawsuit against Amazon after the hoverboard they purchased through the website in November 2015 exploded and caught fire. The board they bought as a Christmas present for their children burned down their $1 million house and injured three of their family members on January 9, 2016.
According to the recently filed lawsuit, the fire “completely destroyed the plaintiffs’ house and virtually all of their personal belongings in a matter of minutes,” and severely injured their 16-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son. The Fox family also claimed the hoverboard’s lithium battery package was not originally manufactured by Samsung as represented on Amazon’s website. Rather, the hoverboard was a counterfeit product from China.

Tire manufacturer Goodyear has been fined over $1 million over the deaths of factory employees and numerous other employee safety violations at one of its plants in Danville, Virginia.
Virginia’s Occupational Health and Safety Administration (VOSH) cited the company for four willful violations of safety policy, and 118 serious violations. These are tied to safety conditions at the plant, such as not following certain protocols and not having proper guarding outside of machinery. One man was killed on April 12th by drowning in equipment that contained boiling water and oil. Another employee sustained burn injuries while testing a tire curing press.
Goodyear has implemented a thorough safety review of its plant and is hoping to prevent future accidents and violations, but it clearly has a long road ahead of it.

Five class action lawsuits and two individual personal injury lawsuits were filed across seven states in response to a National Highway Transportation Safety Administration investigation into Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Jeep Grand Cherokee’s gear shifters.
Among these plaintiffs are Victor and Irina Yelchin, parents of film and television actor Anton Yelchin, who died on June 19, 2016 in Los Angeles after his Jeep rolled backwards and pinned him against a gate. The incident instantly killed him. The lawsuit was filed in a California state court to be consolidated with the other suits.
According to Judge Sarah Vance, “The actions share complex factual questions arising out of allegations that the monostable electronic gearshift installed in certain vehicles manufactured by FCA US LLC is defective and unreasonably dangerous in that it allegedly fails to provide the driver with an adequate indication of whether the vehicle is in the ‘park’ position and lacks a safety override function that would place the vehicle in ‘park’ automatically when a driver exits the vehicle while it is in another gear.”

Kalvyn Johnson-Bey and Carleen Scrogham, parents of 18-year-old Hope, Tennessee resident Xavier Scrogham filed a tort claim for personal injury against the town of Nashville and Nashville police officer Leonard Burch on Friday, September 16. Scrogham was killed after a police chase was started by 25-year-old Burch at 11:36 p.m. on August 29, 2016 on U.S. Route 31.
Burch, who was off-duty at the time of the incident, said Scrogham passed his vehicle on a motorcycle going 120 miles per hour in a 911 cellphone call with Bartholomew County emergency dispatchers. However, the legal counsel for Scrogham’s parents, Trent McCain, said Scrogham “made a mistake” and that “he should not have done what he did.” McCain notes also that Scrogham “was chased by a young man in T-shirts and shorts in a police car for 20 miles out of the officer’s jurisdiction” and that Burch was acting in the capacity of a “power-drunk cowboy” in his pursuit of Scrogham.

National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell revealed that the league’s 32 club owners will be providing an additional $100 million for efforts to advance medical engineering and research into preventing, diagnosing, and treating head injuries, on top of the $100 million already spent on medical and neuroscience research.
The project, called the Play Smart Play Safe initiative, also mandates that a physician is hired to serve as the league’s official chief medical officer.
Goodell said that the NFL had already made 42 rule amendments – such as employing 29 medical professionals during each game – since 2002.
In 2015, a federal judge approved a settlement for 80 concussion-related lawsuits on behalf of more than 2,000 NFL players that was filed as s single class-action lawsuit. The agreement gives up to $5 million per retired player for serious medical conditions associated with serious head trauma, baseline medical exams for retired NFL players, and financial awards for retired players who were diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia.

General Motors has issued a recall on 4.3 million vehicles to address an issue in which the airbags may not deploy during an accident. So far, one death and three injuries have been tied to this airbag issue.
This recall is contrary to other recent airbag recalls, as those concern airbags deploying at unexpected and unnecessary times, leading to serious or fatal injuries. In the recalled GM vehicles, a sensor for the airbags would sometimes run a diagnostic test while the car was being driven, putting it in a state where it was incapable of deploying the airbags should they be needed. GM plans to address this issue with a software update that will be available at dealerships.
The recall marks a drastic change in the way GM handles safety and defects. After sustaining heavy fines during a previous recall involving ignition switches that would cause cars to switch off while being driven, the company has implemented a program that allows people to report safety concerns.
